Friedrich & Mary Ellen Honay
Cross-Cultural Missionaries
Friedrich and Mary Ellen Honay are church planters in Eastern Germany in the city of Leipzig. They moved there 6 years ago to start the Leipzigprojekt with a core team of 16 people. Today the church plant is growing and God is doing many beautiful things in the church. The current hope is to multiply this church and become a sending church to bring the Gospel to Germany and the nations.
The Honays have been serving on the mission field in Germany together for the past 12 years. Before that they got married in Louisville, KY, where Mary Ellen was born and where she met Friedrich while he did an internship with Sojourn Midtown. They first served in Hamburg, Germany, which is Friedrichs home town where they had there first two children Fritz and Olivia. After they moved to Leipzig they had their third kid, Felix.
Both Mary Ellen and Friedrich didn’t grew up as christians and got converted in their late teenage years. After God saved them, he soon called them into full time ministry so that Mary Ellen was always expecting the Lord to move her overseas and Friedrich was preparing to church plant of all of his adult life. Together they get to serve HIM by reaching the inhabitants of one of the most beautiful and historical cities in all of Germany.
Eastern Germany is one of the most secular places in the world and behind the iron curtain the history and legacy of the reformation evaporated almost completely. This means that many of the areas of eastern Germany though historically heavily impacted by the Gospel would not be considered post-christian but rather unreached or even unengaged with less than 1% Christians.
They hope and pray that God would revive that nation and continue to plant healthy churches for the secular, atheistic indigenous German neighbour. Please take a minute as you read this, to pray for that. Thank you!
